DIY Easy Read

Purpose

DIY Easy Read exists to remove the cost and time barriers that have historically prevented organisations from providing Easy Read consistently and at scale. It makes Easy Read production accessible to any organisation — not just those with the budget to commission specialist human powered translation.

Scope

DIY Easy Read is applicable to any organisation or individual that needs to produce Easy Read documents. It is particularly relevant to New Zealand government agencies with obligations under the Accessibility Charter, disability service providers, community organisations, healthcare providers, and any entity that regularly communicates in writing with people who benefit from Easy Read.

Components

  • Document upload interface: accepts PDF and Word (.docx) files

  • AI translation engine: applies natural language processing to simplify and restructure source text to Easy Read standard

  • Image Bank: a proprietary collection of over 7,000 AI-generated illustrations matched to concepts during translation

  • Review and editing interface: enables users to check and refine the translated output

  • Download functionality: produces a formatted Easy Read document ready for distribution

Outputs

An Easy Read formatted document produced within minutes at a fraction of the cost of human powered translation. Review is encouraged to verify accuracy. The output is suitable for everyday documents including letters, announcements, schedules, policies, and plans.
